An Infected Blister

Blisters form when the skin is injured and are the body’s way of protecting itself from further damage. A blister is a bubble of fluid that collects to cushion the injury so the underlying skin can heal. Blisters show up on the feet when there is friction from shoes. If a blister breaks, bacteria can enter the wound and an infection can develop. This can be painful and dangerous if left untreated. Sepsis, or an infection can enter the bloodstream and be life-threatening. Most blisters are tender or painful when they occur but when one is infected, it is more apt to be warm, have oozing pus, have a foul smell, and be swollen. If you have a blister that appears to be infected, bleeds when you touch it, or does not seem to be healing, it is suggested you contact a podiatrist for an examination and proper treatment.

Blisters may appear as a single bubble or in a cluster. They can cause a lot of pain and may be filled with pus, blood, or watery serum. If your feet are hurting, contact Edward S. Pozarny DPM of Arlington Podiatry Center. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Foot Blisters

Foot blisters are often the result of friction. This happens due to the constant rubbing from shoes, which can lead to pain.

What Are Foot Blisters?

A foot blister is a small fluid-filled pocket that forms on the upper-most layer of the skin. Blisters are filled with clear fluid and can lead to blood drainage or pus if the area becomes infected.

Symptoms

(Blister symptoms may vary depending on what is causing them)

  • Bubble of skin filled with fluid
  • Redness
  • Moderate to severe pain
  • Itching

Prevention & Treatment

In order to prevent blisters, you should be sure to wear comfortable shoes with socks that cushion your feet and absorb sweat. Breaking a blister open may increase your chances of developing an infection. However, if your blister breaks, you should wash the area with soap and water immediately and then apply a bandage to the affected area. If your blisters cause severe pain it is important that you call your podiatrist right away.

Causes of Foot Pain

It is believed that 75 percent of people will at some point experience foot pain. This should not come as a surprise, since we are on our feet numerous times daily for nearly our entire lives. The main cause of most foot pain starts with wearing shoes that do not fit properly, are tied too tightly, have heels that are too high, or squeeze the toes. Even exercising in shoes not appropriate for the activity can cause pain in your feet as well as legs, hips, and back. Long term effects include bunions, blisters, corns, and calluses. The next likely cause of foot pain is the way you walk. Rolling your feet inward or outward when you walk can be the cause of other problems, such as flat feet, arch pain, and heel pain. Certain medical conditions, such as gout and arthritis can cause painful inflammation of the bones, ligaments, and tendons of the feet. And since the feet have 26 bones, 33 joints, and more than 100 ligaments, this can be a problem. Finally, running on hard surfaces for long periods of time can cause stress fractures and other foot injuries. A podiatrist is an expert on dealing with the many causes and treatment of foot pain. Whether your pain is immediate or ongoing, it is a good idea to consult with a podiatrist.

How to Get Rid of Corns on Your Feet

Corns are hard bumps that develop on the skin, typically on the feet. They can occur due to pressure and friction caused by poorly fitting shoes. The skin hardens to protect the delicate tissue underneath. Corns are like calluses, but they can become tender and cause pain too. They are generally not serious but may be uncomfortable. Removing the ill-fitting shoes or source of friction is the best way to prevent corns from worsening. Usually soaking the affected foot, applying a moisturizer, and rubbing the corn with a washcloth will help soften the corn and remove excess layers of skin that have built up. If you develop a corn that does not heal, begins to bleed, or becomes infected it is suggested that you seek the counsel of a podiatrist.

Corns can make walking very painful and should be treated immediately. If you have questions regarding your feet and ankles, contact Edward S. Pozarny DPM of Arlington Podiatry Center. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Corns: What Are They? And How Do You Get Rid of Them?
Corns are thickened areas on the skin that can become painful. They are caused by excessive pressure and friction on the skin. Corns press into the deeper layers of the skin and are usually round in shape.

Ways to Prevent Corns
There are many ways to get rid of painful corns such as:

  • Wearing properly fitting shoes that have been measured by a professional
  • Wearing shoes that are not sharply pointed or have high heels
  • Wearing only shoes that offer support

Treating Corns

Although most corns slowly disappear when the friction or pressure stops, this isn’t always the case. Consult with your podiatrist to determine the best treatment option for your case of corns.

Doctors who treat ailments of the foot are referred to as podiatrists. They are skilled in diagnosing various foot conditions in addition to providing quality treatment. Podiatric medicine is considered to be a specialty, involving the feet and ankles. There are several areas of this type of medicine to be proficient in, including public health, orthopedics, or surgery. These doctors are able to correct foot deformities, and can advise patients on how to care for their foot conditions. The education process starts with earning a bachelor's degree, followed by completing a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM) program. This takes approximately four years to complete. The next step is to enroll in a podiatric medicine and surgery residency program. It is mandatory for podiatrists to obtain a license to practice podiatry in their specific state, in addition to passing a state exam. Many podiatrists choose to work in an office or hospital, or can become part of a group practice. If you are interested in pursuing podiatry as a career, it is suggested that you speak with a podiatrist about any questions or concerns you may have.

If you are experiencing pain in the feet or ankles, don’t join the stubborn majority refusing treatment. Feel free to contact Edward S. Pozarny DPM from Arlington Podiatry Center. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Is a Podiatrist?

Someone would seek the care of a podiatrist if they have suffered a foot injury or have common foot ailments such as heal spurs, bunions, arch problems, deformities, ingrown toenails, corns, foot and ankle problems, etc.

Podiatric Treatment

A podiatrist will treat the problematic areas of the feet, ankle or lower leg by prescribing the following:

  • Physical therapy
  • Drugs
  • Orthotic inserts or soles
  • Surgery on lower extremity fractures

A common podiatric procedure a podiatrist will use is a scanner or force plate which will allow the podiatrist to know the designs of orthotics. Patients are then told to follow a series of tasks to complete the treatment. The computer will scan the foot a see which areas show weight distribution and pressure points. The podiatrist will read the analysis and then determine which treatment plans are available.
