Causes of a Stress Fracture in the Foot

A stress fracture is also known as a hairline fracture. It can be a common foot injury among runners and people who frequently participate in sporting activities. Stress fractures can also occur when the surface used for running is changed and when the speed or duration is suddenly increased. Someone who experienced a stress fracture previously may be more susceptible to incurring another one. Before treatment can begin, a proper diagnosis is usually performed. An X-ray is generally taken to determine the extent of the break. An MRI may also be needed to view the surrounding tissue. If the verdict is a stress fracture the activity that caused it must be stopped temporarily, followed by frequently elevating the foot. Most patients will fully recover within two to eight weeks. If you think you have endured a stress fracture, please schedule an appointment with a podiatrist so the correct treatment can begin.

Activities where too much pressure is put on the feet can cause stress fractures. To learn more, contact Edward S. Pozarny DPM from Arlington Podiatry Center. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep your pain free and on your feet.

Dealing with Stress Fractures of the Foot and Ankle

Stress fractures occur in the foot and ankle when muscles in these areas weaken from too much or too little use.  The feet and ankles then lose support when walking or running from the impact of the ground. Since there is no protection, the bones receive the full impact of each step. Stress on the feet can cause cracks to form in the bones, thus creating stress fractures.

What Are Stress Fractures?

Stress fractures occur frequently in individuals whose daily activities cause great impact on the feet and ankles. Stress factors are most common among:

  • Runners
  • People affected with Osteoporosis
  • Tennis or basketball players
  • Gymnasts
  • High impact workouts

Symptoms

Pain from the fractures occur in the area of the fractures and can be constant or intermittent. It will often cause sharp or dull pain with swelling and tenderness. Engaging in any kind of activity which involves high impact will aggravate pain.

Shoes and Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome

Tarsal tunnel syndrome is a lesser-known condition of the foot among the general public. This condition occurs when pressure is applied to the nerves in the ankle, sometimes causing discomfort and pain. When an individual has a case of tarsal tunnel syndrome, there are a number of steps that they might consider taking to treat the condition or mitigate the pain. One of these remedies includes wearing special shoes that are designed to combat the pain caused by tarsal tunnel syndrome. If you suffer from this foot condition, you might consider wearing shoes that relieve foot pain by essentially absorbing shock caused by weight-bearing activities. Shoes that provide extra support to the foot are also ideal for some patients with tarsal tunnel syndrome. For example, shoes that have sufficient arch and heel cushioning can provide needed support to the foot. If you have tarsal tunnel syndrome, consider contacting a podiatrist who can help you address any concerns. Schedule an appointment today.

Tarsal tunnel syndrome can be very uncomfortable to live with. If you are experiencing tarsal tunnel syndrome, contact Edward S. Pozarny DPM of Arlington Podiatry Center. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome

Tarsal tunnel syndrome, which can also be called tibial nerve dysfunction, is an uncommon condition of misfiring peripheral nerves in the foot. The tibial nerve is the peripheral nerve in the leg responsible for sensation and movement of the foot and calf muscles. In tarsal tunnel syndrome, the tibial nerve is damaged, causing problems with movement and feeling in the foot of the affected leg.

Common Cause of Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome

  • Involves pressure or an injury, direct pressure on the tibial nerve for an extended period of time, sometimes caused by other body structures close by or near the knee.
  • Diseases that damage nerves, including diabetes, may cause tarsal tunnel syndrome.
  • At times, tarsal tunnel syndrome can appear without an obvious cause in some cases.

The Effects of Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome

  • Different sensations, an afflicted person may experience pain, tingling, burning or other unusual sensations in the foot of the affected leg.
  • The foot muscles, toes and ankle become weaker, and curling your toes or flexing your foot can become difficult.
  • If condition worsens, infections and ulcers may develop on the foot that is experiencing the syndrome.

A physical exam of the leg can help identify the presence of tarsal tunnel syndrome. Medical tests, such as a nerve biopsy, are also used to diagnose the condition. Patients may receive physical therapy and prescriptive medication. In extreme cases, some may require surgery.

The Importance of Moisturizing the Feet

Taking care of the feet on a daily basis is a key part of maintaining your overall health. One of the most important ways in which an individual can care for and pamper their feet is by keeping them sufficiently moisturized. Keeping the feet moisturized protects against dry and cracked skin that might lead to conditions such as cracked heels. People may choose to apply a wide range of different moisturizers to their feet. Using moisturizing products like a glaze for the heel can help ensure that your skin on the feet feel smooth to the touch. Glazes or moisturizers may contain honey, aloe, and other moisturizing ingredients. While not all moisturizers may help you successfully get rid of calluses immediately, moisturizing the feet can nonetheless be helpful and beneficial. If you are someone that wants to take care of your feet, contact a podiatrist today about moisturizing the feet.

  • Gouging toenails affecting nearby toe
  • Shoes that don’t fit properly
  • Pressure sores

Types of Sprains in the Foot

The foot bears the weight of the entire body with every step taken. Most foot sprains occur in two main areas, the midfoot, which includes the arch, and the 1st metatarsal joint, which is the base of the big toe. Midfoot sprains are generally the result of a sports-related fall or collision. Another cause of a midfoot sprain is the twisting of the area common among snowboarders, windsurfers, and divers. Ballet dancers and horseback riders are also at a higher risk for midfoot sprains. The joint at the base of the big toe, known as the MPJ or metatarsophalangeal joint, is the site of a sprain often called turf toe. It is the result of the repetitive action and sudden burst of energy that causes the ligaments in this joint to become overstretched. This type of MPJ sprain is common among football players and ballet dancers. Symptoms of a foot sprain are pain, swelling, and tenderness. Some bruising may also take place, and with serious sprains, bearing weight becomes difficult. For guidance on how to deal with sprains in the foot, please consult a podiatrist.

The Shape of Heel Spurs

Heel spurs are bony hooks that can form on the heel bone. They are essentially calcium deposits that may be caused by wearing significantly ill-fitting footwear. It is possible for heel spurs to cause pain. Heel spurs have an interesting shape. They come to almost a pointy end at the tip of the heel spur. This is why the heel spur is said to resemble a kind of hook shape. The hook points towards the plantar fascia in the foot and is relatively small in size compared to the heel bone. It is suggested that an individual who has heel spurs seek medical attention from a podiatrist if the heel spur is causing significant pain or is inhibiting or preventing motion such as walking. Contact a podiatrist today and schedule an appointment if you are struggling with heel spurs.

Heel spurs can be incredibly painful and sometimes may make you unable to participate in physical activities. To get medical care for your heel spurs, contact Edward S. Pozarny DPM from Arlington Podiatry Center. Our doctor will do everything possible to treat your condition.

Heels Spurs

Heel spurs are formed by calcium deposits on the back of the foot where the heel is. This can also be caused by small fragments of bone breaking off one section of the foot, attaching onto the back of the foot. Heel spurs can also be bone growth on the back of the foot and may grow in the direction of the arch of the foot.

Older individuals usually suffer from heel spurs and pain sometimes intensifies with age. One of the main condition's spurs are related to is plantar fasciitis.

Pain

The pain associated with spurs is often because of weight placed on the feet. When someone is walking, their entire weight is concentrated on the feet. Bone spurs then have the tendency to affect other bones and tissues around the foot. As the pain continues, the feet will become tender and sensitive over time.

Treatments

There are many ways to treat heel spurs. If one is suffering from heel spurs in conjunction with pain, there are several methods for healing. Medication, surgery, and herbal care are some options.

If you have any questions feel free to contact our office located in Arlington, VA . We offer the latest in diagnostic and treatment technology to meet your needs.
